Autumn in the Vosges
Woods, meadows and quiet paths in October
Autumn is perhaps the loveliest season around Hohrodberg. The beech woods turn deep orange and gold, and the mountain meadows glow one last time before settling down for winter. The air is clear and cool, the paths are empty — and you have the Vosges all to yourself.
In October the days grow short and hazy — and that is what makes them special. When the mist fills the Munster valley and the summits are still in the sun, the ridge above Hohrodberg feels like an island. A moment you won’t forget.
Best autumn colours: mid-October to early November. A lovely day walk: Hohrodberg → Barrenkopf → Lac de Forlet → back. About 3–4 hours, little climbing.
